The Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management awarded its prestigious Alford-Axelson Award for Nonprofit Managerial Excellence to The Bridge Youth & Family Services in the small nonprofit category. Characteristics of The Bridge highlighted include nimble and innovative programming, highly engaged volunteers and effective financial management.
The award, created in 2002, honors the legacy of Nils G. Axelson, a community healthcare leader and visionary and Jimmie R. Alford, a contemporary leading thinker and practitioner in the nonprofit arena, by recognizing and celebrating Chicago area nonprofit organizations that exemplify extraordinary managerial excellence.
Nominated organizations are evaluated on a full range of managerial excellence criteria:
• Clear, compelling, and well-communicated mission and vision
• Coherent organizational strategy that aligns programs and services to mission and goals
• Strong and effective leadership by staff and board
• Solid financial management
• Diversified funding model
• Well-developed fundraising and external relations program
• Strong sense of integrity throughout organization’s culture
• Shared sense of purpose and values within organization and among key external constituents
• Process in place for evaluating organizational performance.
The award, which comes with a $5,000 unrestricted cash grant, courtesy of ShoreBank, was presented by Chicago Tribune “Ask Amy” Columnist, Amy Dickinson at The Axelson Center’s Annual Symposium on May 13, 2010. Other finalists in the Small Nonprofit Category, for organizations with a budget under $2.5 million are: Barrington Council on Aging, Inc., Chicago Children’s Choir, Family Health Partnership Clinic, and Umoja Student Development Corporation.
