Have you ever wished you knew then what you know now?

Have you ever wished you knew then what you know now? Six years ago I became a mentor at The Bridge. I thought it was about giving time and energy to solve overwhelming problems. Was I was up to the task? Was I good enough? Now I know how simple it is, how the process trains you, and how rewarding it is.

I learned to listen. We ask a child what grade they’re in, and what they want to be. Ask them who they are now, and what brings them joy, then be quiet and listen. It will put a smile on their face.

There is a training class when you become a mentor. There are monthly meetings and useful resources. It isn’t always easy. There are challenges. But the kids will train you. They will tell you when they’re bored, excited, and when they need help. They’ll let you know when you’re on the right track, and when you mess up. They’ll make you a better person.

How rewarding is it? I don’t know yet because it gets better each time I see a smile on the face of a child in the program. You’ve seen a child smile. How rewarding is that!
